Four years ago I would go out to a night club and wear one of my favorite shirts and nicely pressed slacks and I would be told that I looked forty years old. It was very hard to take as I had just turned 36. I would go on to hear this kind of talk a lot around this time.

My plan was to give myself one full year of taking the three products and I would pray that the routine would work. After ninety days I was starting to see progress. As each month went by I would tell myself that I'm at 15% and now I'm at 20% and so on. Now that I look back, I see that I was being way too conservative. When I thought that I was at 50% of the way there and on the road to recovery, I was probably really only at 20%. I still had another 80% of improvement to go. As some people would say, I hadn't even "scratched the surface"

After almost three years of this regimen I must say that I am very happy and that my results are definitely better then expected. I was a guy who had obvious hair loss to anybody that knew me or not. Now I'm a guy that still has a little frontal recession and still a little thinning in the crown and for the most part has a significant amount of hair.

I went out to a local establishment recently and a 27 year old guy talked to me for about an hour and he told me that he was 27 and that I'm "what 32,33?" I said try 39. He said "really, wow you actually look about 32 and you seem like a 32 year old" Of course the first thing that comes to your mind is that he was just trying to be nice and just complementing me. But I really believe that he was sincere as I have been getting a lot of this kind of treatment for the past year.

I can go out now and I have that magnetism again where people want to know me or talk to me instead of looking at me like I'm some crazy man. I still wear the nice shirts, I still work out and my body still looks as good as it did when I was 36, my teeth are still nice and white and I still look tan. Going Natural With Hair Loss Remedies

Since the introduction of Rogaine in the early 1980's, androgenic mediated hair loss, or 'male pattern baldness' has been considered a treatable condition through the use of pharmaceutical preparations. The perception that over-the-counter and prescription drugs are the only means to successfully treat this type of hair loss is perpetuated by the lack of well-funded and publicized studies on the efficacy of natural treatments. However, as the understanding of the biological mechanism of male pattern baldness has become clear through a great body of research, the reality of an effective natural treatment regimen is at hand. After a review of the available natural products, some suggestions will be made for creating your own regimen for treating hair loss naturally.

The overall cause of male pattern baldness is now well-known: this type of hair loss seen in about a third of the male population is mediated by the androgenic metabolite of testosterone known as dihydrotestosterone or DHT. The production of this now-infamous hormone increases later in life for many men, along with changes with the receptors for this hormone at the hair follicles.

In general, the pertinent hair follicles shrink with continued exposure to the androgenic hormone, some forming only small, villus hairs, while others eventually die completely. Some sources claim these follicles are still getting an adequate blood supply, while others note a waxy buildup or scar-like tissue surrounding the follicles, preventing adequate nutrient delivery. Thus, the localized cause of hair loss, at the follicle level, is still being researched. This does not mean there has been success in discovery of natural hair loss remedies!

Whether using a pharmaceutical, natural, or combination regimen to re-grow hair, genetically-related hair loss should be addressed on two fronts: reducing the production and effects of DHT, and stimulating the hair follicles themselves back into action.

Prescription drugs such as Finasteride and Dutasteride are available which lower blood levels of DHT, and have been used to improve hair loss conditions. There are now several well-known natural, plant-based products which either reduce testosterone's conversion to DHT (via the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme system), block the binding of DHT to receptor sites, or both. Most common, and most important are Saw Palmetto Berry extract and Stinging Nettle Root extract. These to herbs work in combination to both block the conversion of testosterone to DHT and prevent it's binding to receptor sites in the scalp. Other herbs employed with similar functions include pygeum africanum and pumpkin seed oil, both used to bring into balance the testosterone/DHT ratio; lastly, the plant sterol Beta-Sitosterol is often used successfully to treat prostate enlargement, which has similar causes to male pattern baldness - whether it will support hair growth is not yet known, but it likely won't hurt!. Finally, getting an adequate supply of Zinc is also important in maintaining this hormonal balance. The entire androgen hormone regulation system is fairly complex; just remember these items: Saw Palmetto, Nettle Root (not leaf!), Pygeum, Zinc, and Beta-Sitosterol. By the way, if using a prostate formula for these nutrients, they should be taken in gel cap form - they are better absorbed this way than in plain powder, and hence more effective.

In addition to these herbs, which are also commonly used around the world for blocking the creation and effects of DHT, Procyanidins, or Polyphenols, have been shown to inhibit DHT systemically, AND can stimulate hair growth when applied topically. These anti-oxidant compounds first became renown with the discovery of the amazing action of grape seed extract and it's powerful ability as a free-radical scavenger. More recently, Japanese researchers went through the effort of testing HUNDREDS of compounds in the laboratory for their effect on the stimulation of hair growth, and they found the compounds of grape seed extract grew hair at a greater rate than the pharmaceutical preparation Minixodil. With further testing, using variations of the polyphenols, they discovered those found in apple skin polyphenols to be even more effective, nearly twice effective as Rogaine. Further, with the addition of Forskolin, another herbal extract, the effect was even greater. Exciting news! The interesting thing is that these compounds actually stimulated the hair follicles to become active, whereas it seems Rogaine works by lowering blood pressure in the scalp, thereby increasing blood flow to the follicles. And these compounds did not produce an initial 'shedding' as Rogaine has been known to do.

In addition to the polyphenols, certain essential oils alone and in combination can be effective at hair growth stimulation. In a Scottish study on alopecia areata patients, a blend of Lavender, Thyme, Cedarwood and Rosemary oils based in Jojoba and Grapeseed was found to significantly enhance the regrowth of hair compared to an application of just the base oils alone. Many essential oils, including lavender and rosemary, contain 'ketones', molecules that have been found to cause the skin to regenerate. Further, these oils could be enhanced with the addition of Rosehip Seed oil, which contains compounds similar to Retin-A, a pharmaceutical which has been used in combination with Rogaine for faster effects.

Given all this wonderful information, how does one combine them into an effective regimen? The best thing to do is keep it simple - the more simple it is, the more likely it is you'll stay with it for the several months it will take to see significant effects. So, for the systemic DHT suppression and inhibition, look at formulas either designed specifically for hair, or those for the support of the Prostate gland - they will contain almost the exact same ingredients. Look for a high-quality supplement, with standardized Saw Palmetto extract, Nettle Root extract, and Pygeum extract. Do not take the un-extracted herbs, they will not likely be strong enough in doses you are willing to consume. Saw Palmetto can be consumed in doses between 160 and 320mg daily, Nettle Root a bit more, and Pygeum significantly less. They should be in a gel cap, preferably in Pumpkin seed oil. Take a separate Beta Sitosterol supplement, around 400mg daily, if it is not included already. This is typically found in dry capsules, and there have not been reports of the importance of consuming this in an oil-based capsule, though you can take it with fatty food if you want to be sure (this may help the absorption). Add an oral supplement of Green Tea extract, Grape Seed extract, or Apple Polyphenol extract if you like, along with a good multivitamin.

For the topical application, one can find natural hair care products on the internet using apple polyphenols, or you can make your own for less cost. Apple polyphenols are just now becoming available in bulk and in capsules. You can create your own topical blend by mixing these into water or an alcohol/water solution at 1-3% by weight (1 ounce of water weighs about 30 grams, so 1 gram of apple polyphenols in one ounce of water will produce about a 3% solution - more is not better here, as there was a drop-off in effectiveness with higher concentrations in the laboratory). An herbal extract of Forskolin can also be added to enhance the effects. Finally, this can all be made in Nettle Root tea as the base, adding a DHT inhibitor to the blend. Try applying 2 - 3 times daily.

For the essential oils, the recipe used in the scientific study was as follows: 3 drops of essential oil of thyme, 3 drops of essential oil of lavender, 3 drops of essential oil of rosemary 3 drops of essential oil of cedarwood based in 1/8 cup of grapeseed oil and 1/8 cup of jojoba oil. Apply during the day some time, massaging into the scalp, and leaving in for 20 minutes to an hour, then wash out, or apply before going to bed. This will give enough time for the oils to penetrate the skin and have their effect. If you wish to further enhance this blend, you may squeeze some of the gel caps of Saw Palmetto et. al. into the oil, which can reduce the effects of DHT topically, in addition to the systemic effect of the oral supplements.

So there it is, the roundup of the more well-known and tested natural remedies for male pattern baldness. While Rogaine for growth stimulation, and Finasteride or Dutasteride for DHT inhibition are completely reasonable ways to go, their costs are high and the effects of their long term use are not well known. And then there are some folks that would prefer to stay away from chemically manufactured medicines altogether - hopefully this bit of information will help. There is much more research available on the internet, though hopefully this is enough information to get you confidently started.

Why Iron Deficiency Causes Hair Loss

When you are told that your blood test showed your iron levels to be within the correct reference range, it may not mean that the range was correct for hair regrowth.

Hair loss studies:

During a study, 153 women who had been diagnosed with telogen effluvium (rapid shedding) were examined. 72 percent of women in the pre-menopausal group were found to have iron deficiency as the cause of Telogen Effluvium.

Reference ranges are around 40ng/mL. However this needs to be higher if you are looking to regrow lost hair.

While iron deficiency is the most common cause of Telogen Effluvium in pre-menopausal women, medications and hormone changes are the most common cause of Telogen Effluvium in post-menopausal women.

Besides being a trigger for Telogen Effluvium where the majority of hair shedding occurs, iron deficiency can also be the most likely underlying cause when hair loss is subtle; slowly thinning out over many months or even years. This is more common among women of childbearing age due to menstruation and pregnancy. Iron is found mainly in the blood, and accordingly substantial amounts can be lost in childbirth.

Iron is also involved in the oxygenation of your body's red blood cells. Iron play a significant role in various body functions, but it is also essential for sustaining normal growth and maintenance of hair.

In order for the body to maintain a sufficient balance of iron, the amount excreted must be replaced by the amount ingested in the diet. When the amount of iron used exceeds the amount we absorbe from our food, the body has no other option than to draw upon our limited reserves. The fall of iron stores normally passes through several stages: lowered iron stores, iron depletion and iron deficiency anemia.

Only about 10% of ingested iron is absorbed and this is dependent on the type of food in the diet. Certain foods may inhibit the absorption of iron, tea and coffee, bran and egg albumin.

Whereas other foods may enhance the absorption of iron, i.e. vitamin C, and flesh foods. (The Vitamin C and iron rich food must be eaten at the same time).

In meat, 65% of iron is bound to the heme molecule (from hemoglobin and myoglobin), which is relatively easily absorbed. The rest of the iron in meat and all iron in plants is non-heme iron which is nore difficult to absorb.

Hair follicles are known to contain ferritin, and when the circulating stores of ferritin decline then these stores are called upon to ensure support for more essential cells, such as bone marrow.

The loss of this ferritin from the follicle cells can affect the ability of the hair to grow. This leads to the development of fine non pigmented hair.

Can PCOS And Hair Loss Really Be Related?

A lot of women that experience hair loss from one degree to another may actually have an affliction named PCOS. The medical term for PCOS is polycystic ovary syndrome and afflicts a lot of women between the ages of 12 through 45.

There are a lot of treatment plans for PCOS but if left unchecked could be the causation of hair thinning. The major immediate remedy for PCOS is to identify a means to bring down the weight of the person.

So much emphasis is made on proper eating habits these days that it seems to go without heed. However in cases of obesity this may be the culprit for hair loss.

The symptoms of PCOS include weight gain, irregular periods, fertility problems and thinning of hair.

Knowing that there are a lot of reasons why women experience this hair malady sometimes it's best to eliminate the obvious. The process of elimination is a good strategy to identify the cause of hair loss that can prove or disprove a disease.

PCOS diet requirements are typically going to be geared at helping you to lose weight, but more, they will also seek to eliminate the chances of further problems that you may see from your insulin resistance, such as early adult onset diabetes. Lowering your fat intake and avoiding carbohydrates particularly processed foods is one of the best ways to help yourself by implementing a PCOS diet.

Carbohydrates tend to be less easily uptaken by the body when one is insulin resistant. It is better for you to steer clear and to eat instead more natural foods with higher fiber. Fresh fruits and vegetables will be best for those who are insulin resistant. Nuts, berries, fresh vegetables and fewer processed foods are the order of the day.

Avoiding sugar or highly sugared or processed foods will also be in your best interests in your PCOS diet. Avoidance of the fruit juices that may be more sugary than fresh fruit, and also staying away from items with high fructose corn syrup or corn sugar is also something you will want to do as much as possible.

A PCOS diet is a more natural and healthful diet. Protein foods are the best way to go for your condition and may help you to lose the weight that is sometimes difficult to lose for the PCOS sufferer. Your PCOS diet, in combination with exercise will go a long way toward helping you to avoid the complications that can take place in PCOS.

Just by watching an hour of TV, or flipping through your favorite magazine you know of the thousands of weight loss "plans" or diets that are around today. For women with PCOS, it may be a bit misleading or confusing.... we know we're supposed to watch our carbs, only eat "good carbs" as this is what best controls our insulin resistance, therefore controlling our PCOS. But the question is, which diet or plan do we choose?

Below are the most common eating plans used by women with PCOS. I say eating plan because I don't consider them "diets". We are not starving ourselves, eating the wrong things for a short amount of time to lose weight, etc. This is a life long choice for us. If we want to control our PCOS and its symptoms, we need to chose an eating plan and stick to it, indefinitely.

Glycemic Index

The glycemic index (GI) is a system used to classify foods with carbohydrates on how fast they raise our blood-sugar levels. There are 3 general categories:

High GI Foods (GI value 70%2B)
These cause a fast rise in blood-glucose levels
Medium GI Foods (GI value 55-69) These cause a medium rise in blood-glucose
Low GI Carb Foods (GI value 54 or less) These cause a slow rise in blood-sugar

This is considered the best option for women with PCOS. A low-GI plan is a balanced diet based with medium and low GI carbs, plus healthy protein and fats (including plenty of healthy whole grains as well as fruits and vegetables. A great plan to follow is Weight Watchers, as they base their meals on the Glycemic index principal.

South Beach Diet

The SBD consists of lean proteins, healthy fats and oils, nuts, seeds, and fresh vegetables and fruits and is a favorable diet for PCOS. The theory is if you cut back on carbs, and eat a higher percentage of protein that your body will have less insulin responses to carbs. It consists of three phases, where you slowly add more carbs back into your meals. The point of the first phase is to get rid of cravings that PCOS'ers have for carbs by eliminating them completely. Then, as good carbs are added into back, you are less likely to lose control and binge. The types of carbs allowed on the SBD are those that score low on the glycemic index.

The Zone Diet

The Zone Diet is about balancing your hormones to control hunger on fewer calories but still getting the nutrients your body needs for long-term health. The Zone is a moderate-carbohydrate, moderate-protein, moderate fat diet that has approximately one gram of fat for every two grams of protein and three grams of carbs. These dietary ratios are based off of the dietary recommendations from the Joslin Diabetes Research Center at Harvard Medical School for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The Zone's meals include:

Low-fat protein
Low glycemic-load carbs (mostly fruits and vegetables)
Heart-healthy monounsaturated fats

Another common "low carb" plan is The Atkins diet. This is NOT recommended for women with PCOS, in fact it should be avoided completely. The Atkins diet has been associated with a large number of heart related conditions and even death. It focuses on completely removing carbs, and eating high fat, unhealthy proteins (such as hamburger, bacon, etc) which is why we need to stay FAR away.

Women with PCOS already have a higher risk of heart disease, high cholesterol/blood pressure and stroke, so adding a diet high in fatty proteins would only increase our risk. Plus, starving your body of the carbs it needs to survive only increases the risk even more.

Millions of women around the world are unable to conceive due to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS, a complex reproductive disease or infertility problem. PCOS may or may not involve cysts in the ovaries, but always involves insulin resistance that causes the ovaries to absorb too much sugar and produce testosterone.

In the case of PCOS the body secretes far too much androgen, the male hormone, which counteracts the ovaries' ability to make enough progesterone necessary for a normal cycle. The estrogen level is OK; but the level of the luteinizing hormone (LH) is actually higher than usual. The luteinizing hormone is actually working overtime in an attempt to kick-start the cycle. Due to the high androgen levels interfering with the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), progesterone is not triggered. In other words your follicles don't develop... instead they turn into pea-sized cysts on your ovaries. The ovaries can then enlarge.

Because the male hormone levels are out of whack you may develop:

facial hair
hair on other parts of your body
a balding issue
acne
obesity
irregular periods

Researchers at the Royal Alfred Hospital, Macquarie University, and the University of Sydney in Australia recently ran a clinical trial to see whether a low glycemic index (low-GI) diet might help women with PCOS achieve pregnancy more quickly.

The Australian researchers gave the women in their study two very simple options:

1. Follow a diet of 'ordinary foods' eaten in carefully prescribed quantities, or

2. Eat any foods they liked, as long as they were low on the glycemic index. Low glycemic index (low-GI) foods release sugars slowly into the bloodstream.

The purpose of both diets was to treat insulin resistance, not full-fledged Type 2 diabetes. Many women who have untreated PCOS, however, eventually develop Type 2 diabetes.

At the end of a year, half of the women who started their diets had managed to stay on plan or to 'graduate' from their diets after losing 7 per cent of their total body weight. Among the women who followed a strict, calorie-restricted plan, 63% had resumed having normal menstrual periods, a strong indication their fertility had returned. Among women who ate whatever foods they liked from a low-GI list, however, 95% had resumed having normal menstrual periods.

In PCOS, fertility returns when insulin resistance is reversed. The results of this study suggest that Type 2 diabetics, as well, may do better when they resolve to eat:

low-fat meats
fish
fruits and
vegetables

...rather than counting carbs and calories in highly processed foods.

Insulin resistance and PCOS go hand in hand. Women with insulin resistance are either at risk for, or have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Causes and Treatment of Hair Loss

Thinning hair and progressive baldness is something that can seriously affect self image and self esteem in both men and women.

With men, however, it is something that is more or less accepted as a natural occurrence by society at large. In fact, about fifty percent of the general population experience normal hair loss by the time they reach 50 years old. We may not like it, but sooner or later half of us are forced to accept it.

Hair loss in women, though, is often perceived in a much different way.

Male pattern baldness is an all too common phenomenon which at the moment has no known cure. It is something that is determined largely by genetics.

Its development can however be slowed down with the correct treatment. Read on for more information on this.

Alopecia is a form of hair loss that is a medical condition. It can occur at any age, though it generally affects females more than males.

There are several variations of alopecia:

Androgenic Alopecia

As mentioned above, this is the variation of alopecia which is commonly known as 'male pattern baldness'. Often hereditary, this condition can in fact affect both sexes.

Treatment to slow down androgenic alopecia is available. Applying minoxidil (Rogaine) to the surface area and taking finasteride (Propecia) orally have proven to be beneficial here. So if this condition is affecting you, be sure to consult your doctor or health advisor about possible treatment.

Natural approaches that have proved successful in preliminary studies include saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol. Consult your health food store for more information on these particular supplements.

Alopecia Areata

This is patchy hair loss, affecting different sections of the head, which tends to affect teenagers and young adults more than older people.

This can be a hereditary condition and for many - but not all - is unsightly and embarrassing but temporary, generally lasting about a year. Changes of hormone levels during pregnancy can sometimes trigger the condition.

Alopecia Totalis

Some sufferers of alopecia areata continue to lose hair until they have none left on the scalp. This is known as alopecia totalis.

Alopecia Universalis

As the name suggests, alopecia universalis is the term given to loss of all bodily hair.

Telogen Effluvium

Temporary thinning of the hair, telogen effluvium is not restricted to the scalp and can affect all bodily hair growth. This condition can last for a few months and may be caused by certain medications.

Be sure to check with your doctor if you are taking medication which appears to increase your hair loss.

Hair Loss due to Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy.

Many people receiving treatment for cancer often experience total hair loss. Because this is a widely experienced and well known side effect, specialist support and wigs are available which can help until the hair regrows.

Hair Loss due to Hairdressing Treatments

Excessive use of chemicals, or a bad reaction to the chemicals used in hair treatments such as permanents, can result in hair loss. It can also be brought on by long term frequent use of overly hot implements such as hair straighteners and curling tongs. In the latter case the hair cuticle will often become brittle causing it to break. Most people who experience hair loss due to hairdressing will find re-growth once they stop using the trigger items.

Hair Loss in Children

Children can suffer from alopecia areata and any bald patches should be reported to a doctor promptly in order to begin treatment. Children may be referred on to a dermatologist specializing in hair loss.

Hair loss in children can be caused by trauma of the scalp and hair because of hair being too tightly pulled or plaited over a long period of time.

A more common reason is a fungal infection called tinea capitis which can affect head hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. When noticed, the child should be seen by a doctor.

Prevention and Treatment

In addition to the above mentioned medically prescribed pharmaceuticals and natural supplements it is wise to cover all bases.

Research has shown that some forms of hair loss can be caused by a lack of vitamins and minerals in the diet. This being the case, it is prudent to ensure that a healthy and varied diet is eaten. However if hair loss starts to occur despite healthy eating then a doctor can refer you for vitamin deficiency tests.

It may also be that a separate condition or medication could be preventing the body from absorbing vitamins and minerals from the food being eaten. Again, consult with your doctor in order to determine if this is in fact the case.

Stress is a recognised trigger for hair loss and this is especially so with alopecia areata. In this case, prevention of further hair loss means examining and managing daily stress levels as much as possible.

Self diagnosis is, however, not the ideal way to treat your specific hair loss type. If you are experiencing excessive hair loss it would be wise to see a doctor who can arrange tests and if necessary get treatment started, or refer you on to a specialist.

Knowing the medical definition of your particular hair loss is one thing, but coping with it emotionally can be very difficult and support is often critical.

It helps enormously if there is acceptance and understanding from the sufferer's family and friends. This is extremely helpful as hair loss can seriously undermine the sufferer's sense of worthiness, attractiveness etc and can even result in severe depression. If this is the case, then your doctor should be able to refer you for counseling, self help groups or a wig service.

The Five Step Turnaround Process

Business turnaround is about reversing a business's decline, restoring it to stability and then re-growing its value. But business turnarounds are about healing the sick, not attempting to raise the dead, and so this article looks at the seven key factors that need to be in place and the key stages in the process.

So, to achieve a turnaround, you will generally therefore need to have the following seven things present:

1 A viable business: Some core business that has future potential growth and profitability around which the business can be rebuilt.

2 Time: Real turnarounds take time and if they are not started early enough, they will either fail or require protection through an appropriate insolvency procedure.

3 Cash: Turnarounds need money, often there are costs associated with the initial restructuring (such as redundancy costs) and then to finance the future regrowth of the business, and this money must be found either from within the business ('bootstrapping'), or from outside by way of new investment or refinancing.

4 Vision: A clear goal to which the business is to be directed, to provide both a target and motivation.

5 Management: Who have both the will to achieve the turnaround (it's your plan and vision) but also the skills (functional and situational) to make it happen, or access to external resources who can provide these skills when required.

6 Stakeholder support: Management cannot do it all by themselves. They also need to take suppliers, customers, staff, bankers, shareholders, and other stakeholders with them.

7 Confidence in the process: The stakeholders need to see how management (who will be regarded as having got us into this mess) are going to get us out again, and this has to entail a structured approach in dealing with the problem.

Turnarounds tend to divide into three key phases and whilst each phase needs to consider finance, people and marketing issues, there is definitely a shift in priorities over time from finance to marketing.

The first phase is normally crisis management, focused on short-term survival and restructuring down to a viable core concentrating on solving the immediate financial crisis. During this period, you may need to reduce employee numbers but it is important to keep key staff committed and businesses often also slim down their portfolio of products and markets to only those that are clearly profitable.

The second phase is one of stabilisation and preparation for the relaunch of the business. This involves putting both appropriate financing arrangements to support increased trading levels, and the right management team who can push the marketing and delivery of growth products.

The third phase is then regrowth based on achieving long-term sustainable competitive advantage. To do so involves managing the business's working capital cycle to support the business as it grows and recruiting and retaining the right people to drive growth of turnover and profits.

The five key stages of any turnaround plan can therefore be summarised as:

1 Recognising the need. The first, and in some ways, most important step towards solving a problem are realising that you have one, how urgent it is, what is causing it and the need to face up to it.

2 Being around to do it. This essentially means that to have a future you have to survive the immediate cash crisis and quickly get a strong grip on what your business's finances are and what these are telling you about its performance, the reasons for any problems, and possible solutions.

3 Deciding what to do. This involves taking an objective look at what you want to do with your business, its industry, markets, products, competitive strengths and weaknesses, and coming up with a broad picture of the key issues and your proposed strategy and priorities long and short term.

This then needs to be used to generate the detailed action plans for who is going to do what, when, and with what projected results.

Often you will need to do 'diagnostic work', drilling down into your performance in certain cases to get a better understanding of the cause of underperformance and its remedy.

Marketing plans and forecasts need to be prepared and you need to organise (or perhaps reorganise) your management team so as to achieve the planned milestones, budgets and objectives.

4 Doing it. You need to lock in whatever support it is you need from suppliers, customers, employees, the bank ('stakeholders'), to ensure that the plan can happen and ensure the required financial resources are in place.

You then need to manage, manage, manage, manage.

Manage the people: obviously yourself and your team, but also the stakeholders, by keeping them involved and informed in the process as it unfolds and develops.

Manage the process: constantly be identifing and capturing the values of the next 'quick wins' so that the plan continues to show positive results all the way through. Monitor progress and take steps to identify and deal with any slippages but also keep an eye on the overall realism of the plan. No plan survives contact with reality and as the business's circumstances change over time, so your plan also has to change. But if it does, ensure that you communicate this change and the reasons for it to the stakeholders.

Manage the business: don't forget to keep an eye on the numbers and ensure that the process of change does not distract from the need to continue to manage the day-to-day business as well, if not better, than before.

Manage the turnaround risks: keep an eye on the risks that you may be running whilst operating a business in difficulty and ensure that you cover yourself against potential problems.

5 Keep on succeeding. Once your business is heading back in the right direction, keep going. Use the skills and approaches you have adapted to return it to being a successful business to ensure that it continues to prosper and keep on using the business's numbers to assess its performance and keep the strategy and business development plan under regular review.

Going Natural With Hair Loss Remedies

Since the introduction of Rogaine in the early 1980's, androgenic mediated hair loss, or 'male pattern baldness' has been considered a treatable condition through the use of pharmaceutical preparations. The perception that over-the-counter and prescription drugs are the only means to successfully treat this type of hair loss is perpetuated by the lack of well-funded and publicized studies on the efficacy of natural treatments. However, as the understanding of the biological mechanism of male pattern baldness has become clear through a great body of research, the reality of an effective natural treatment regimen is at hand. After a review of the available natural products, some suggestions will be made for creating your own regimen for treating hair loss naturally.

The overall cause of male pattern baldness is now well-known: this type of hair loss seen in about a third of the male population is mediated by the androgenic metabolite of testosterone known as dihydrotestosterone or DHT. The production of this now-infamous hormone increases later in life for many men, along with changes with the receptors for this hormone at the hair follicles.

In general, the pertinent hair follicles shrink with continued exposure to the androgenic hormone, some forming only small, villus hairs, while others eventually die completely. Some sources claim these follicles are still getting an adequate blood supply, while others note a waxy buildup or scar-like tissue surrounding the follicles, preventing adequate nutrient delivery. Thus, the localized cause of hair loss, at the follicle level, is still being researched. This does not mean there has been success in discovery of natural hair loss remedies!

Whether using a pharmaceutical, natural, or combination regimen to re-grow hair, genetically-related hair loss should be addressed on two fronts: reducing the production and effects of DHT, and stimulating the hair follicles themselves back into action.

Prescription drugs such as Finasteride and Dutasteride are available which lower blood levels of DHT, and have been used to improve hair loss conditions. There are now several well-known natural, plant-based products which either reduce testosterone's conversion to DHT (via the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme system), block the binding of DHT to receptor sites, or both. Most common, and most important are Saw Palmetto Berry extract and Stinging Nettle Root extract. These to herbs work in combination to both block the conversion of testosterone to DHT and prevent it's binding to receptor sites in the scalp. Other herbs employed with similar functions include pygeum africanum and pumpkin seed oil, both used to bring into balance the testosterone/DHT ratio; lastly, the plant sterol Beta-Sitosterol is often used successfully to treat prostate enlargement, which has similar causes to male pattern baldness - whether it will support hair growth is not yet known, but it likely won't hurt!. Finally, getting an adequate supply of Zinc is also important in maintaining this hormonal balance. The entire androgen hormone regulation system is fairly complex; just remember these items: Saw Palmetto, Nettle Root (not leaf!), Pygeum, Zinc, and Beta-Sitosterol. By the way, if using a prostate formula for these nutrients, they should be taken in gel cap form - they are better absorbed this way than in plain powder, and hence more effective.

In addition to these herbs, which are also commonly used around the world for blocking the creation and effects of DHT, Procyanidins, or Polyphenols, have been shown to inhibit DHT systemically, AND can stimulate hair growth when applied topically. These anti-oxidant compounds first became renown with the discovery of the amazing action of grape seed extract and it's powerful ability as a free-radical scavenger. More recently, Japanese researchers went through the effort of testing HUNDREDS of compounds in the laboratory for their effect on the stimulation of hair growth, and they found the compounds of grape seed extract grew hair at a greater rate than the pharmaceutical preparation Minixodil. With further testing, using variations of the polyphenols, they discovered those found in apple skin polyphenols to be even more effective, nearly twice effective as Rogaine. Further, with the addition of Forskolin, another herbal extract, the effect was even greater. Exciting news! The interesting thing is that these compounds actually stimulated the hair follicles to become active, whereas it seems Rogaine works by lowering blood pressure in the scalp, thereby increasing blood flow to the follicles. And these compounds did not produce an initial 'shedding' as Rogaine has been known to do.

In addition to the polyphenols, certain essential oils alone and in combination can be effective at hair growth stimulation. In a Scottish study on alopecia areata patients, a blend of Lavender, Thyme, Cedarwood and Rosemary oils based in Jojoba and Grapeseed was found to significantly enhance the regrowth of hair compared to an application of just the base oils alone. Many essential oils, including lavender and rosemary, contain 'ketones', molecules that have been found to cause the skin to regenerate. Further, these oils could be enhanced with the addition of Rosehip Seed oil, which contains compounds similar to Retin-A, a pharmaceutical which has been used in combination with Rogaine for faster effects.

Given all this wonderful information, how does one combine them into an effective regimen? The best thing to do is keep it simple - the more simple it is, the more likely it is you'll stay with it for the several months it will take to see significant effects. So, for the systemic DHT suppression and inhibition, look at formulas either designed specifically for hair, or those for the support of the Prostate gland - they will contain almost the exact same ingredients. Look for a high-quality supplement, with standardized Saw Palmetto extract, Nettle Root extract, and Pygeum extract. Do not take the un-extracted herbs, they will not likely be strong enough in doses you are willing to consume. Saw Palmetto can be consumed in doses between 160 and 320mg daily, Nettle Root a bit more, and Pygeum significantly less. They should be in a gel cap, preferably in Pumpkin seed oil. Take a separate Beta Sitosterol supplement, around 400mg daily, if it is not included already. This is typically found in dry capsules, and there have not been reports of the importance of consuming this in an oil-based capsule, though you can take it with fatty food if you want to be sure (this may help the absorption). Add an oral supplement of Green Tea extract, Grape Seed extract, or Apple Polyphenol extract if you like, along with a good multivitamin.

For the topical application, one can find natural hair care products on the internet using apple polyphenols, or you can make your own for less cost. Apple polyphenols are just now becoming available in bulk and in capsules. You can create your own topical blend by mixing these into water or an alcohol/water solution at 1-3% by weight (1 ounce of water weighs about 30 grams, so 1 gram of apple polyphenols in one ounce of water will produce about a 3% solution - more is not better here, as there was a drop-off in effectiveness with higher concentrations in the laboratory). An herbal extract of Forskolin can also be added to enhance the effects. Finally, this can all be made in Nettle Root tea as the base, adding a DHT inhibitor to the blend. Try applying 2 - 3 times daily.

For the essential oils, the recipe used in the scientific study was as follows: 3 drops of essential oil of thyme, 3 drops of essential oil of lavender, 3 drops of essential oil of rosemary 3 drops of essential oil of cedarwood based in 1/8 cup of grapeseed oil and 1/8 cup of jojoba oil. Apply during the day some time, massaging into the scalp, and leaving in for 20 minutes to an hour, then wash out, or apply before going to bed. This will give enough time for the oils to penetrate the skin and have their effect. If you wish to further enhance this blend, you may squeeze some of the gel caps of Saw Palmetto et. al. into the oil, which can reduce the effects of DHT topically, in addition to the systemic effect of the oral supplements.

So there it is, the roundup of the more well-known and tested natural remedies for male pattern baldness. While Rogaine for growth stimulation, and Finasteride or Dutasteride for DHT inhibition are completely reasonable ways to go, their costs are high and the effects of their long term use are not well known. And then there are some folks that would prefer to stay away from chemically manufactured medicines altogether - hopefully this bit of information will help. There is much more research available on the internet, though hopefully this is enough information to get you confidently started.

Can PCOS And Hair Loss Really Be Related?

A lot of women that experience hair loss from one degree to another may actually have an affliction named PCOS. The medical term for PCOS is polycystic ovary syndrome and afflicts a lot of women between the ages of 12 through 45.

There are a lot of treatment plans for PCOS but if left unchecked could be the causation of hair thinning. The major immediate remedy for PCOS is to identify a means to bring down the weight of the person.

So much emphasis is made on proper eating habits these days that it seems to go without heed. However in cases of obesity this may be the culprit for hair loss.

The symptoms of PCOS include weight gain, irregular periods, fertility problems and thinning of hair.

Knowing that there are a lot of reasons why women experience this hair malady sometimes it's best to eliminate the obvious. The process of elimination is a good strategy to identify the cause of hair loss that can prove or disprove a disease.

The thought of even having this type of disease never crosses the mind of women because they can't associate their weight with the loss of their hair. Yet this can be a real issue and having a treatment plan to regulate body weight can be a solution for this.

Getting back on track with a healthy diet plan can benefit both the body and the hair at the same time. It's never too late to start with some type of diet plan that can start with regular exercise.

Of course you should check with your regular physician and have yourself diagnosed but insuring that your body receives the proper nutrients can only help you in the long run.

PCOS and hair loss can be a temporary condition if you have it diagnosed and go on a preventive treatment plan that will help you.

It's probably no secret to you, if you're here reading this, that PCOS is a type of endocrine disorder that can strike you at nearly any point in your life. It's also probably known to you already what PCOS is and what is believed to cause it--an inability to deal with glucose and an insulin intolerance in your body.

All of these things combined can cause a condition in your body where the ovaries begin to work less and to create symptoms that are difficult for you to handle over a long period of time.

Among the things that your PCOS can cause are:

*Infertility
*Excessive hair growth
*Cramping and Pain
*Multiple ovarian cysts

One of the most important parts of PCOS and helping to control it is your diet. PCOS diets need to be well controlled and to eliminate many different things from the diet that may be causative agents of some of the problems. Given that insulin intolerance is one of the major parts of PCOS, a PCOS diet may be able to help you to lose some of those symptoms.

PCOS is in fact one of the most common endocrine disorders and the onset of it typically brings you symptoms that are given by more than one or two abnormal cysts which begin to grow on the ovaries.

You will find that a PCOS diet may actually help you with some of these symptoms. Symptoms are plentiful in PCOS and many of these can be controlled by a PCOS diet.

PCOS diet requirements are typically going to be geared at helping you to lose weight, but more, they will also seek to eliminate the chances of further problems that you may see from your insulin resistance, such as early adult onset diabetes. Lowering your fat intake and avoiding carbohydrates particularly processed foods is one of the best ways to help yourself by implementing a PCOS diet.

Carbohydrates tend to be less easily uptaken by the body when one is insulin resistant. It is better for you to steer clear and to eat instead more natural foods with higher fiber. Fresh fruits and vegetables will be best for those who are insulin resistant. Nuts, berries, fresh vegetables and fewer processed foods are the order of the day.

Avoiding sugar or highly sugared or processed foods will also be in your best interests in your PCOS diet. Avoidance of the fruit juices that may be more sugary than fresh fruit, and also staying away from items with high fructose corn syrup or corn sugar is also something you will want to do as much as possible.

A PCOS diet is a more natural and healthful diet. Protein foods are the best way to go for your condition and may help you to lose the weight that is sometimes difficult to lose for the PCOS sufferer. Your PCOS diet, in combination with exercise will go a long way toward helping you to avoid the complications that can take place in PCOS.

Just by watching an hour of TV, or flipping through your favorite magazine you know of the thousands of weight loss "plans" or diets that are around today. For women with PCOS, it may be a bit misleading or confusing.... we know we're supposed to watch our carbs, only eat "good carbs" as this is what best controls our insulin resistance, therefore controlling our PCOS. But the question is, which diet or plan do we choose?

Below are the most common eating plans used by women with PCOS. I say eating plan because I don't consider them "diets". We are not starving ourselves, eating the wrong things for a short amount of time to lose weight, etc. This is a life long choice for us. If we want to control our PCOS and its symptoms, we need to chose an eating plan and stick to it, indefinitely.

Glycemic Index

The glycemic index (GI) is a system used to classify foods with carbohydrates on how fast they raise our blood-sugar levels. There are 3 general categories:

High GI Foods (GI value 70%2B)
These cause a fast rise in blood-glucose levels
Medium GI Foods (GI value 55-69) These cause a medium rise in blood-glucose
Low GI Carb Foods (GI value 54 or less) These cause a slow rise in blood-sugar

This is considered the best option for women with PCOS. A low-GI plan is a balanced diet based with medium and low GI carbs, plus healthy protein and fats (including plenty of healthy whole grains as well as fruits and vegetables. A great plan to follow is Weight Watchers, as they base their meals on the Glycemic index principal.

South Beach Diet

The SBD consists of lean proteins, healthy fats and oils, nuts, seeds, and fresh vegetables and fruits and is a favorable diet for PCOS. The theory is if you cut back on carbs, and eat a higher percentage of protein that your body will have less insulin responses to carbs. It consists of three phases, where you slowly add more carbs back into your meals. The point of the first phase is to get rid of cravings that PCOS'ers have for carbs by eliminating them completely. Then, as good carbs are added into back, you are less likely to lose control and binge. The types of carbs allowed on the SBD are those that score low on the glycemic index.

The Zone Diet

The Zone Diet is about balancing your hormones to control hunger on fewer calories but still getting the nutrients your body needs for long-term health. The Zone is a moderate-carbohydrate, moderate-protein, moderate fat diet that has approximately one gram of fat for every two grams of protein and three grams of carbs. These dietary ratios are based off of the dietary recommendations from the Joslin Diabetes Research Center at Harvard Medical School for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The Zone's meals include:

Low-fat protein
Low glycemic-load carbs (mostly fruits and vegetables)
Heart-healthy monounsaturated fats
Warning !!!!

Another common "low carb" plan is The Atkins diet. This is NOT recommended for women with PCOS, in fact it should be avoided completely. The Atkins diet has been associated with a large number of heart related conditions and even death. It focuses on completely removing carbs, and eating high fat, unhealthy proteins (such as hamburger, bacon, etc) which is why we need to stay FAR away.

Women with PCOS already have a higher risk of heart disease, high cholesterol/blood pressure and stroke, so adding a diet high in fatty proteins would only increase our risk. Plus, starving your body of the carbs it needs to survive only increases the risk even more.

Millions of women around the world are unable to conceive due to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS, a complex reproductive disease or infertility problem. PCOS may or may not involve cysts in the ovaries, but always involves insulin resistance that causes the ovaries to absorb too much sugar and produce testosterone.

In the case of PCOS the body secretes far too much androgen, the male hormone, which counteracts the ovaries' ability to make enough progesterone necessary for a normal cycle. The estrogen level is OK; but the level of the luteinizing hormone (LH) is actually higher than usual. The luteinizing hormone is actually working overtime in an attempt to kick-start the cycle. Due to the high androgen levels interfering with the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), progesterone is not triggered. In other words your follicles don't develop... instead they turn into pea-sized cysts on your ovaries. The ovaries can then enlarge.

Because the male hormone levels are out of whack you may develop:

facial hair
hair on other parts of your body
a balding issue
acne
obesity
irregular periods

Researchers at the Royal Alfred Hospital, Macquarie University, and the University of Sydney in Australia recently ran a clinical trial to see whether a low glycemic index (low-GI) diet might help women with PCOS achieve pregnancy more quickly.

The Australian researchers gave the women in their study two very simple options:

1. Follow a diet of 'ordinary foods' eaten in carefully prescribed quantities, or

2. Eat any foods they liked, as long as they were low on the glycemic index. Low glycemic index (low-GI) foods release sugars slowly into the bloodstream.

The purpose of both diets was to treat insulin resistance, not full-fledged Type 2 diabetes. Many women who have untreated PCOS, however, eventually develop Type 2 diabetes.

At the end of a year, half of the women who started their diets had managed to stay on plan or to 'graduate' from their diets after losing 7 per cent of their total body weight. Among the women who followed a strict, calorie-restricted plan, 63% had resumed having normal menstrual periods, a strong indication their fertility had returned. Among women who ate whatever foods they liked from a low-GI list, however, 95% had resumed having normal menstrual periods.

In PCOS, fertility returns when insulin resistance is reversed. The results of this study suggest that Type 2 diabetics, as well, may do better when they resolve to eat:

low-fat meats
fish
fruits and
vegetables

...rather than counting carbs and calories in highly processed foods.

Insulin resistance and PCOS go hand in hand. Women with insulin resistance are either at risk for, or have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
